| Living in the Pacific Islands gave me many opportunities to work on candid portraits. The subjects are mostly people native to the islands, and they typically enjoy being photographed. More often than not, they will thank the photographer, and are thrilled when they are presented with prints from the shoot. I make a conscious effort to avoid any formal posing, and I try to leave backgrounds that give some impression of the space the subject is occupying. Naturally, most images are discarded, but now and then a real gem will crop up in the pile of digital debris. Travelling to new countries also got me pondering the different approaches to living we humans have. I tried to capture some of this idea with my “street” images. One thing I try to keep in mind, is that art doesn’t have to be pretty. |
